About The Project
After acquiring the project from the previous developer, Invenergy began developing Flat Ridge 4 & 5 in 2022.
Our efforts to date have largely focused on partnering with landowners, conducting necessary studies to inform siting of project facilities, and completing permitting.
In March 2024, construction of 64 wind turbines commenced with civil work including access road and foundation installation. Underground cable trenching, turbine delivery, and erection activities will take place June through November 2024. During this time, please plan for increased road traffic and road detours.
Please return to this page throughout construction for updates regarding road closures or other project updates within the community.
County road bridge upgrades have been completed.
Delivery of turbine components and other large construction materials is complete.
You may see cranes for building the wind turbines, trenchers for installing underground collection cables, and decompaction equipment for restoration on your property more frequently. Please contact Rick if any questions/concerns with these construction activities on your property.
If there are questions, please contact our local Construction Manager Richard Hayden via phone, email, or our contact form.
The Flat Ridge Wind Energy Center expects to pay millions of dollars in County Contribution Payments, property taxes, lease payments to landowners, wages to employees, and payments for local goods and services. Local schools and county infrastructure will benefit from the increase in revenue from Contribution Payments and property taxes paid by the project.
Kansas is a national and world leader in wind power generation. 42% of the electricity in Kansas is generated by wind - which represents the second highest percentage of wind power generation of any state. Kansas also ranks 5th in the nation for total installed wind generation capacity. Kansans' electricity bills have remained well below the national average due to this abundance of wind energy.
Invenergy develops projects where there is a strong resource, interested customers, and most importantly, landowners who want to participate in the project. Invenergy is committed to our host communities and looks forward to continuing to work closely with Kingman and Harper Counties, and contributing to the area's economic development.
To avoid and minimize impacts to wildlife and other natural resources, we work with state and federal agencies and other interested stakeholders to site, build, and operate our facilities responsibly. This includes adhering to all federal, state, and local laws, and following our own voluntary standard siting guidelines. Invenergy has conducted pre-construction environmental surveys to assess the wildlife and natural resources in the project area and has coordinated with the Kansas Department and Wildlife and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Our surveys aligned with recommendations from both agencies, and including identifying and characterizing wetland/waters and potentially sensitive wildlife habitat with the project area. The results of these surveys were integrated into the siting of this project.
Invenergy worked with Kingman and Harper Counties to establish a road use agreement for Flat Ridge 4 & 5, ensuring all county roads and infrastructure will be well-maintained during construction and left in the same or better condition than they were prior to their use for the construction of the project.
Wind turbines and access roads have a very small footprint. Approximately 98-99% of land under easement will remain in agricultural use, allowing wind energy to support the agricultural industry and landowners to continue to farm their land.
